Circus Culture is committed to prioritizing and amplifying the fight for racial and social justice, and specifically for the Black community.
We acknowledge that we have always stated that we aim for “inclusive community”, without actively doing the work to counter systemic racism. This is not ok.
We commit to learning how to be anti-racist as an organization.
We acknowledge that this is a lifelong commitment, and that intersectionality must be paramount.
Circus Culture pledges to start with the following action items edited 4/26/21:
➖Permanently integrate one hour per week of pay for each Circus Culture staff member to engage in anti-racist education.
➖Contribute monthly to the diversity of educators that we learn from on social media which the Circus Culture community benefits from.
➖Activate a monthly donation of $100 to the ACLU and the Traditional Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Healing
➖Donate to circus organizations that focus on supporting Black youth continually.
➖Challenge fellow white circus school owners and directors to create their own list of actionable and sustained initiatives and conversations to support a foundation of anti racist education and conversation in the circus sector.
➖Get uncomfortable, stay uncomfortable, and grow in the discomfort (thank you for this language and so much more Michelle Courtney Berry)
➖ Be pro-actively anti-racist from this point onward, rather than reactively so - dig deep to keep learning. Support circus culture staff and community in doing the same.
➖Work to create a circus environment where our BIPOC and AAPI community members can feel holistically supported and catered to.
➖Investigate the racist and white supremacist components of circus history and present and work to dismantle them.
➖Read this list every week to be held accountable to these undoubtably small efforts, make this effort consistent and sustained, and to add to it over time.
➖Humbly make edits and changes to this approach when necessary.
